Preventing Damage to Your Fence

Your fence may go through normal wear and tear over time, but there are some immediate damages to your fence that you may be able to prevent. Because it's always important to be on the precautionary side, we have provided a list of tips and advice to ensure your fence is well prepared for a variety of natural damages.

Storm Damage:

It's hurricane season in Florida so you need to make sure you’re doing everything you can to protect your fence from the damages of a severe storm. Here are some tips you can try to help prevent damage to your fence during bad weather.
1. Cut down any trees that hang over the fence and/or trees around the fence.
2. Move any objects near or around your fence that may cause damage if the winds are strong enough.
3. Reinforce your fence to ensure a stable structure during hurricane season.

Vegetation Damage:

Another type of damage to your fence that can be prevented is vegetation damage. I’m not talking as much about gardens, but other greenery and plants such as Ivy. Ivy can spread fast so it is important to remove the Ivy as soon as you notice it starting to grow. If your fence becomes damaged, for whatever reason, Ivy may cause further destruction by growing into the damaged part of your fence. If the ivy continues to grow all over the fence it may also prevent you from being able to maintain your fence to protect it from long term damages.

Top 4th of July Destinations

1. New York City:
NYC is probably the most obvious 4th of July destination, but it’s also one of the best. You can go to a baseball game during the day or sightsee throughout the city. With so much to do to keep you busy during the day until the fantastic firework display at night, it’s no wonder why NYC is a top destination for the 4th of July.

2. Las Vegas:
Las Vegas is a top destination just about any time of the year, but the airfare actually tends to be a little bit cheaper on the 4th of July due to the hot temperatures. The affordability of a plane ticket to Las Vegas is what makes Vegas a top destination for the 4th of July. Sure it might be hot, but there are plenty of indoor activities to enjoy such as shopping, eating at some of the best restaurants or seeing a spectacular show!

3. Lake Tahoe:
For the people that actually want to relax on the 4th of July, they should consider Lake Tahoe for a possible destination. You can go boating during the day and check out all the amazing views of this peaceful lake then relax and enjoy the firework show called “Lights on the Lake” at night.

4. West Palm Beach:
West Palm Beach is a great 4th of July destination if you’re looking to stay in the state of Florida. Not only is a vacation to WPB on the 4th of July cheap, it's also filled with fun things to do. You can watch musical performances at many of the 4th of July celebrations, as well as take your kids to many of the gaming areas WPB has to offer! After a long day, you can end the night the way every Floridian would want to, and that’s watching the firework show on the beach.

5. New Orleans:
A 4th of July vacation in New Orleans includes just about everything you could ask for. There’s the party-like atmosphere, great food, casinos, music festivals, barbecuing in the park, and amazing firework shows. For the firework shows you can even take a ride on one of the steamboat cruises that will take you out on the water allowing passengers to enjoy the firework display up close.

We wish everybody a safe and festive 4th of July!

Backyard Projects: DIY Garden Pots

From pots, garden boxes, seeds, fertilizer, and more...gardens can be expensive and confusing! Have you ever planted something then realized you didn’t label it or you have no idea what it is after it has sprouted? Well not anymore, here are 3 DIY Ideas that will help make your garden flourish with beauty and functionality! The best part is that they are inexpensive.
Project Number 1:  Chalkboard Painted Pot
Materials: Clay Pot, Chalkboard Paint, Stencils, Pencil, Painters Tape, and Chalk.
First make sure your clay pot is clean of any dirt, dust, soil, water, etc. then you are going to trace the stencil of your choice onto the pot with a pencil. The next step is to place painters tape on the outline of your trace to ensure you get perfect paint lines. After that is complete, paint away and label the pot as desired!
You will never lose track of your vegetables, herbs, or flowers again!
Project Number 2: Space Saver Veggies
This project is a great way to save space and to keep pesky critters out of your flowers or vegetables.
Materials: a shoe organizer that hangs and a hanger of your choice.
Simply take the shoe organizer you found at a bargain store, under your bed or a new one you bought and fill each opening where a shoe is supposed to go with soil and other wanted nutrients. Then simply plant the seed or plant and hang on the fence or a hanger stand of your choice. With this simple garden trick you never have to worry about your garden getting mowed over, dug up, or smashed by kids, lawn men, or even spouses!

Project Number 3: Upside Down Tomato Plant Hanger
This project can be a little tricky but it’s green, inexpensive, and your tomatoes will forever thank you!
Materials: Small Tomato Plant, Empty 2 liter plastic bottle, Duct Tape, Single Hole Punch, String, Soil, and Sharp Knife or Scissors.
An Upside Down Tomato Plant Hanger is easy, once the 2 liter bottle is empty. The first step is to cut the bottom off of the empty 2 liter. A good place to cut the bottle is right above where the 5 little nubs are at the bottom. Then you are going to tape the edges of the bottle you just cut so it is not sharp. After that, go ahead and punch holes through the tape and bottle with the single hole puncher. Remember to make as many holes as you need to hang it and to make the holes big enough to hold your string. Finally you are going to put the tomato plant through the bottle. The easiest way to do this is to start from the bottom of the bottle and send the plant through the lid of the bottle. Last, add soil and hang where the plant can get the desired sunlight.

Can a adding a fence to your yard increase the property value?

Many home owners debate if installing a fence is worth it. Well the debate is over! Installing a fence is definitely worth the money. Not only does a fence define your property line and look great, it increases the value of your home.

How does a fence increase your property value?

The truth is, adding a fence to your property does not necessarily mean it will increase the value. It is how the fence is installed, that will add the value to your property.  Getting a high quality decorative fence installed, will in fact add value to your property. A fence creates a sense of home if it’s done correctly. You wouldn’t want to add a fence if it’s going to look like a prison. This is especially important when it comes to selling your home. Many home buyers will purchase a home that has a fenced in yard before they purchase one without. It’s considered an added value to them. But the fence has to look inviting from the curb.

However, repairing an old fence can also increase the value of your property. But this strategy has its limits. Look at your fence, does it just need to be pressured washed or stained? If so, making these changes could help the value of your property because the fence will no longer be an eye sore to the neighbors or future home buyers. Although, if the fence is sagging in some areas, rotting, broken in more than one spot, or looks like it is going to come crashing down at any minute. Spending money on repairs probably will not increase the value. In this situation it would be beneficial to remove the old fence and get a new fence.

The style of your house, yard and fence reflect who you are. Fences can add character to your yard. Pick a fence that will complement the design of your home and yard to achieve a look that is well thought out and put together.

The most important things to remember when debating if a fence may add value to your home is that, it will only add value if it is aesthetically pleasing, has a purpose and fits the neighborhood.

Get your yard ready for summer time!

Getting your yard ready for summer time can be a daunting task. But with these helpful tips it should take you no time at all to have the best looking yard on the block this summer.

Step 1: Prepping the yard
Prepping the yard for summer time is one of the biggest challenges many home owners face. To prep your yard for the summer time, raking leaves is crucial. You want to rake away all the leaves that have fallen during the winter months and put them in garbage bags to be collected by the disposal company. If you don’t rake away the leaves they will continue to lay there and kill the grass. The next step in prepping your yard for summer time is to make sure that your irrigation system is working properly. To do this, simply turn it on and check the sprinkler heads to make sure they are spraying water where it needs to go.

Step 2: Mulch
Mulching around the base of your freshly cleaned garden beds and trees is essential. When choosing your mulch you want to make sure the color is going to compliment the style of your house. For instance, you don’t want to have red mulch next to a red house. Try using black mulch for contrast. Applying mulch to the base of the trees and around the garden beds is sure to put a good 2-3 inch layer around the entire base. Mulching around the base of plants also has many advantages. It helps keep the soil cool in the scorching temperatures of summer, it discourages weed growth, but most of all, it adds a pretty touch of color to your yard.

Step 3: Aeration
Aerating your yard is a simple task that will encourage the growth of your grass. Aerating your yard means that you will perforate the soil, which helps remove plugs in the soil. Aerating the yard helps air and water reach the roots better. It also helps to over seed and fertilize directly after you have aerated your yard because it allows direct access to the roots.

Step 4: Fertilization
Every homeowner wants their yard to be as green and lush as the next. The key to a lush green yard is to fertilize it. Fertilizing your yard helps keep the weeds at bay, strengthen the root systems of the grass and detour pesky critters. However, there is a trick to fertilizing your yard properly. Too much fertilizer and the sprouts will grow quickly but will not root correctly. Too little fertilizer and the grass will start to die in some spots. Always make sure to use a fertilizer spreader when spreading fertilizer, this ensures that every section of the yard is getting the same amount of fertilizer. And most importantly, always be sure to water the grass directly after fertilizing it to prevent the fertilizer from burning the grass and killing it.
